WHAT

Merck manufactured Januvia is the brand name form of the drug sitagliptin, and represents one of the newest treatment options available for those with diabetes. Januvia is used to help lower blood sugar levels, with the advice of the manufacturer being to combine Januvia use with diet and exercise which can play a crucial role in lowering blood sugar as well. Januvia is classed as an oral antihyperglycemic drug. Januvia works by inhibiting an enzyme called dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP-4). Ordinarily, this enzyme helps to break down incretins GLP-1 and GIP, two hormones released in the guy after eating a meal. Januvia, by preventing DPP-4 from inactivating these two hormones allows for them to increase the release of insulin and suppress glucagon production which together help to restore blood sugar to normal.

WHY

Januvia does not have some of the side effects associated with drugs such as metformin and in studies, Januvia's side effects were comparable to placebo with the exception of mild nausea and cold-like symptoms in a minority of users.

WHO

Januvia is licensed for use in type 2 diabetics. Due to the nature of the onset of diabetes, it is intended for use in adults.

WHEN

Januvia is typically prescribed once a day at a dose of 100mg although the dosages will vary based on a clinician's view of the condition as well as complicating factors that may be present such as renal insufficiency or renal disease. Always refer to product literature
