WHAT

Venlafaxine is the generic form of the drug Effexor, originally introduced by the pharmaceutical company Wyeth and later marketed by Pfizer.

Part of of the serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) class of anti-depressants it works by increasing levels of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain and the body. It is used clinically in the treatment of major depression, generalised anxiety disorder, panic disorder and social phobia.

Venlafaxine works by blocking the reuptake by the brain of both norepinephrine and serotonin leading to an increase in the level of these two key mood altering neurochemicals.

WHY

Venlafaxine, in a meta-analysis comparing it to several other types of anti-depressants of the TCA and MAOI classes and was shown to have less adverse side effects when it came to suicidal ideation and other life threatening forms of overdose.

It has been used for over twenty years now and become one of the most widely prescribed anti-depressants.

WHO

Venlafaxine is licensed for use in adults with depression, anxiety and suffering from panic attacks.
