Premenstrual syndrome (PMS), also known an Premenstrual tension (PMT) is the generalised term relating to the physical, psychological and behavioural symptoms which can occur in the fortnight before a woman's monthly period. Symptoms are varied but typical symptoms of PMS include bloating, breast pain, mood swings and irritability. The symptoms alleviate when the period starts and usually disappear a few days later.
Treatment is centerred around lifestyle changes. The following medication can also be used: painkillers, a combined oral contraceptive pill, oestrogen-only patches and implants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) analogues.
